Away for the Week (Well, a Week and a Half)

I’m all packed and ready to go! That being said – it’s not actually time to go. I just have a tendency to be ridiculously early.

Please excuse my absence from the blog for the next week and a half. There is always a chance that while I am away I will update the blog, but at this time I do not have anything planned. That being said, I am working on a number of projects that relate to the blog at the moment and I do intend to continue doing some work while I am away. I expect I’ll be posting again around the 26th or 27th of August. I hope you’ll check back then.  And I hope that I’ve at least sparked a little bit of curiosity about what it is I am working on.

If you read my last post, yesterday I said goodbye to my old Blackberry and hello to my new iPhone. With that, I just finished creating an Instagram account. I have not actually used the account/app yet, but I do plan to.  Click here to follow me on Instagram. I promise, I’ll start using it soon! See below for more ways to follow and expect to see some changes to this list in the coming months.

Enjoy this next week and a half. I cannot believe how quickly summer is coming to an end.

New Phone & Today’s Face

Goodbye Blackberry, hello iPhone – Yesterday, I said goodbye to my Blackberry Curve and decided to join the Apple world. So far, I am happy with my decision, however, I am having a slight problem with FaceTime – the connection drops when I try to do a video call. Hopefully that is an easy fix. As much as I would love to spend the day playing around with my new phone, I should probably tackle the day’s to-do list, or at least put a dent in it, first. Feel free to leave a comment letting me know of any ‘must have’ apps. And if anyone knows how to fix my FaceTime problem, I’d certainly love to hear from you! Any other iPhone advice is also appreciated.

I thought I would do another ‘Today’s Face’ post. If you missed the first one, click here to view it.

Today's Face August 2013

Primer – I started with a light application of my DIY primer. If you like DIY beauty products and you have not tried this, I highly recommend it.

Foundation – Cover Girl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation (320). I picked this foundation up after reading a couple of positive reviews about it. One of my favorite liquid foundations is Revlon PhotoReady and I have a tendency to compare new foundations to that one. Compared to Revlon PhotoReady, Cover Girl NatureLuxe is not as heavy and while that is not necessarily a bad thing, I find it takes a while to get use to it.

After applying my foundation I applied a DIY bronzer (not pictured). I will be posting this DIY bronzer to the blog in the future. Be sure to check back for that!

Eyeliner: Maybelline New York Unstoppable Eyeliner in Onyx. I love this eyeliner but I do find it can be difficult to remove, but then again it is smudge-proof and water-proof. It is also a little heavier than other eyeliners.

Eyeshadow: Expert Wear- Amethyst Smokes by Maybelline New York. I have really been enjoying purples this summer.

Mascara: Cover Girl Professional all-in-one Mascara in ‘Very Black’. I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I love this mascara because of the natural looking results.

Lipstick/Lip Gloss:  I opted to play up my eyes today but I did not want to ignore my lips completely. I am wearing Avon’s Shine Attract Lipstick in Rose Pink (P03). It is quite subtle but provides just enough shine and tint to complete today’s look!

Thank you so much for reading today’s blog post and for checking out the blog. Feel free to comment leaving a link to your most recent “Today’s Face” post!

Travel Make Up Bag

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I certainly did – I am amazed with the balance of productivity and relaxation I managed to find.

With my week away quickly approaching I have started getting organized. Although I have seen many ‘Travel Make Up Bag’ posts and videos, I don’t think I ever considered doing my own until now. Once the thought crossed my mind I was unable to talk myself out of it. Please remember, I’ve only just started. If it seems like something is missing, it’s probably because it is.

Here’s what I have so far:

Travel Make Up Bag August 2013

Maybelline New York Mineral Powder (910- Classic Ivory) Powder Foundation. Did you know that this foundation is preservative, oil, talc and fragrance free? Click here to view or purchase this product from Amazon.

Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara (100- Blackest Black). If your eyes get irritated easily by mascara you may want to give this hypo-allergenic mascara a try. I happily re-purchased this product for the third time while out shopping with a friend a few weeks ago!

Elizabeth Arden Lipstick (“Blush”). This SPF 15 lipstick by Elizabeth Arden is one of my favorites. Don’t worry about the bright pink color, it goes on quite thin and subtle.

Woodland Berry (15) Lipstick by Estèe Lauder.

Magic Mosaic Multi-Colored Custom Bronzer. This was actually a gift and I know very little about it, other than the fact that I love it!

Avon Glimmersticks Eyeliner in Brown Chocolate (G22), Smoky Grey (G05) and Blackest Night (G04). If you read my previous post on Avon Glimmersticks Eyeliner you may remember that the three of these are water-proof. I am hoping for nice weather and plenty of time in and around the pool. Everyone cross their fingers!

EOS Lip Balm – Summer Fruit and Honeysuckle Honeydew. Yes, it’s true – I am still loving EOS products!

Estèe Lauder Blush All Day Natural Cheek Color (16 – Desert).

Avon GlazeWear Shine Lip Gloss – Tickled Pink.

Revlon PhotoReady Liquid Foundation (003 Shell). How could I leave one of my favorite foundations at home?

Avon Mega Impact Eyeshadow – Khaki Crazed and Nude Attitude.

Maybelline New York Amethyst Smokes Eyeshadow Quad.

Cover Girl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation (320).

I would like to apologize for posting this before I finished packing, but I hope you have enjoyed today’s ‘Travel Make Up Bag’ post. Is this something you would like to see the next time I travel (if so, I promise to wait until I completely packed before posting)?

Thanks for reading!

Marley

Blackheads and Baking Soda

Nobody likes blackheads. Unfortunately, blackheads are common, especially if you have oily skin. Of course, there are a number of products available to help combat blackheads – you’ve probably heard of them, maybe you have tried them and maybe you have even had success with them. If you are looking for a budget-friendly way to help combat blackheads, or if you simply enjoy DIY home remedies, try beating blackheads with baking soda!

Mix 2.5 tbsp of baking soda with 2-2.5 tbsp water. The two should form a paste. If your mixture is slightly runny, that is okay. However, if you wish to thicken it, simply add more baking soda.

Apply the mixture to the areas of your face where blackheads are present and gently massage using your fingers for about two to three minutes. Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry.

DIY Carpet Deodorizer

Hello everyone!

Today’s blog post was inspired by a mandatory household task – vacuuming. Yesterday, I decided that the carpet on the stairs needed more than just a quick vacuum and ended up doing this simple DIY carpet deodorizer.

P1010028

For this you will need a small bowl or container, baking soda and your favorite essential oil. A vacuum is also required. Yesterday, I chose to use lemon essential oil (Click here to purchase lemon essential oil from Amazon). If you try this DIY I would love to hear what essential oil(s) you use.

For every 1/4 cup of baking soda you will want between 10-20 drops of essential oil. Combine the two ingredients in your bowl or container stirring constantly as you add the essential oil. Be careful – you don’t want the scent to be overpowering or for the mixture to start clumping.

Sprinkle the mixture onto the carpet and wait at least one hour before vacuuming.

This mixture can also be used on mattresses and pet beds!

Thank you for reading.

New House Plants & Growing Avocado Trees

Plants August

Over the weekend Tom and I picked up a few new house plants. If it weren’t for Tom I’m not sure I would have any house plants. It’s not that I don’t like plants, because I do – they look nice and there are a number of benefits to having house plants. My problem is that I am still learning to be a green thumb (am I even using that term right??). I have a tendency to over water plants or set them out on our balcony and forget about them for a week or so. I am keeping my fingers crossed that these new plants will not be too difficult to care for!

We are also attempting to grow our own avocado trees. This originally started out as Tom’s project but somehow I tend to be the one responsible for plants. I am very curious to see what happens with these three. Tom finally transferred them to a large pot. I guess it is kind of a wait and see situation … see, this is why plants don’t survive with me!

If anyone has any house plant/gardening/green thumb advice, I would certainly love to hear from you!

Guest Post: Reuse Those Old Sunglasses This Summer And Make Them New Again

Hey everyone;

Today’s post is a guest post. I would love to hear what you think of guest posts. Is this something you would like to see more of? Do you have a post you would like to see featured here?

Enjoy your day, and let’s get to today’s guest post:

Reuse Those Old Sunglasses This Summer And Make Them New Again

Do you have some old sunglasses that you’d like to wear again? Of course you do, who doesn’t?  But if you’re looking for ways to reuse them, you’re in luck! We’re telling you how you can make them new and exciting again, with almost no spending from your part. The truth is you probably already have everything you need for a makeover at hand: your old frames, and just some basic craft supplies. But first, let’s see what state your sunglasses (if you are interested in seeing new sunglass fashions click here) are in:

 1

Image source: Submarines & Sewing Machines

1. Are the arms of your sunglasses broken or unhinged? Sunglasses often break like this, especially if they’re made of cheap plastic. The easiest thing to do is replace the arms entirely. To do that, use the arms from a contrast-colored pair, and you’ll get cool two-tone shades. Get the full tutorial for how to do that here.

2. Are your sunglasses frames scratched? That happens all the time, especially if you carry them in your purse without a case. So cover them up! You can use glitter for part of the frame or even for the entire thing (tutorial here). Similarly, you can use pearls or smaller beads. And if you don’t want any embellishments, simply paint them in a different color which include stripes and tortoiseshell. Did you know that nail polish is perfect for such a project? It’s cheap, with an infinite color palette, and a precise brush. However, if your lenses are scratched, you can drill some holes in them and embroider away (as seen here).

3. Are you simply bored with your sunglasses? Then all you need is a bit of embellishment to make them trendy again. We’re pretty sure you’ve seen how trendy embellished sunglasses are these days… You can use flowers if you’re the romantic type or you can go for an edgier look and use studs or rhinestones. And if you simply don’t want to use glue, you can just paint part of the sunglasses with a pen (tutorial here).
